We’d like to introduce our City Guide series, taking an in-deep look at the Chinese cities we’re operating in and showing the city’s specializations of production. Let’s dive in.

Overview

Nantong is a prefecture-level city in southeastern Jiangsu Province, located on the northern bank of the Yangtze River Delta and east of the East China Sea. The city is known as a “Pearl of the River and Sea”.

Nantong was formed by the sedimentation of the Yangtze River in ancient times. It was famous for salt production in the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD). In the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD), it developed links with cities in Mainland China. The local people speak the Wu dialect and some people in the southern area speak a dialect similar to that of Shanghai.

The city boasts 166 km of watercourse along the Yangtze River and over 20 km of coastline. It covers an area of about 8,544 square kilometers and has a population of about 7.77 million inhabitants at the end of 2021.

The city was one of the 14 coastal cities opened to foreign investment under the State Council of the People’s Republic in 1984.

Economic Profile

Nantong’s pillar industries are chemicals, electronic information, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. Other specializations available are new materials, fine chemicals, electronics, new energy, precision machinery, bio-pharmaceuticals, garments, and textile fibers.

Nantong recorded an impressive performance in 2021, with the total fiscal revenue reaching 71.02 billion yuan, an increase of 11.1% compared to the previous year. The GDP was recorded at 1.1 trillion yuan, up by 8.9% over the previous year, making it one of 24 trillion cities in China. The per capita GDP accounted for 142,642 yuan, up by 8.8%. The city also boasted an international trade value of 340 billion yuan, up by 29.7%, with exports amounting to 226 billion yuan and imports totaling 114 billion yuan – rising by 26.3% and 37% respectively.

Development Zones

Nantong has two major development zones, Nantong Economic & Technological Development Area and Nantong Export Processing Zone.

The Nantong Economic and Technological Development Area, or NETDA, is one of the first 14 national development zones in China. Under the approval of the State Council, the zone was founded in December 1984. At present, it’s among the top 10 development zones, having the largest potential for investment for multinational corporations. The zone is focusing on the development of the new generation of information technology, high-end equipment, medicine and health, and the new energy industries.
