Overview

Weihai is a prefecture-level city and major seaport in eastern Shandong province. It’s a coastal city surrounded by sea on three sides and can be reached through two highways and a railway line. It borders Yantai to the west and the Yellow Sea to the east and is the closest Chinese city to the Korean peninsula.

The city of Weihai was built in 1398 – an era that saw the nation’s coastal area frequently attacked by the Japanese. It was named “Weihaiwei”, which means “stronghold by the coast”, an indication of the city’s military history.

The National Weihai Seafood Festival, held annually in May, involves dozens of restaurants cooperating with each other to cook specialized seafood dishes for tourists. In addition, there is also much domestic and international fishing.

Today, the covers a total area of 5799.84 square kilometers, including an urban area of ​​2607.28 square kilometers. The city has a population of almost 3 million inhabitants.

 

Economic Profile

Weihai’s pillar industries are equipment manufacturing, petrochemicals, electronics, light, machinery, and textiles. According to the statistics released by the Bureau of Statistics of Weihai, the city’s fiscal revenue was 26.69 billion yuan, an increase of 5.7%.

The city’s GDP accounted for 346.39 billion yuan in 2021, up by 7.5 percent. The annual total value of foreign trade was 203.254 billion yuan, an increase of 25.8%. The export value was 149.403 billion yuan, an increase of 28.2% and the import value was 53.850 billion yuan, an increase of 19.3%.

There are three major development zones and one free trade zone in Weihai, including Weihai Torch High-tech Science Park (Weihai THSP), Weihai Economic and Technological Development Zone, Weihai International Port Economic and Technological Development Zone and Weihai Comprehensive Free Trade Zone.
